Awards and Recognitions for Stoppel Lab Members09/2023: Marisa Pacheco was awarded one of two $1000 UF ChE 2022-2023 Fahien Teaching Awards for her commitment and effort serving as a Supervised Teacher in Dr. Ranga Narayanan's Advanced Mathematics graduate level course in Fall 2022.
09/2023: Hannah Bagnis was awarded a $1000 Travel Award from LatinXinChE to attend the 2023 AIChE Annual Meeting and present a poster at the LatinXinChE symposium on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.
09/2023: Axianax Merone was awarded an UG Excellence Scholarship and Hannah Bagnis was awarded an UG Research Excellence Award at the at the UF ChE Annual Award Banquet!
09/2023: Asha Rao was awarded a 2023 UF ChE GRACE Symposium Poster Presentation Award!

12/2022: Marisa Pacheco and Lauren Eccles published a review paper entitled Progress in silk and silk fiber-inspired polymeric nanomaterials for drug delivery with help from Nickolas Davies, Jostin Armada, Alaura Cakley, and Isiri Kadambi over summer 2022.
11/2022: Jostin Armada, an undergraduate in the Stoppel Lab, won 3rd place in his division at the AIChE Student Regional Conference research-based Poster Competition!
10/2022: Marisa Pacheco was selected as an AIChE Women in Chemical Engineering Travel Award Winner! Mari will receive free registration to the 2022 AIChE Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ and $800 award! Congratulations, Mari!

08/2022: Dr. Stoppel and the Stoppel Lab team were awarded an NIH R35 MIRA Award of over $1.8M over 5 years to support the lab's efforts toward Leveraging biodiversity and utilizing genetic engineering to expand the structure and function of silk fibroin biopolymers for biomedical applications
08/2022: Dr. Stoppel, along with Dr. Akito Kawahara and a national team of researchers were awarded a 5 year NSF IntBio Award entitled IntBIO: Collaborative Research: Silk Protein Innovation and Novelty (SPIN) : integrating across disciplines to decipher silk fiber evolution
06/2022: Collaborative work between Joshua Peeples (PhD, ECE May 2022, Zare Lab) and Julie Jameson resulted in an accepted manuscript at BME Frontiers entitled Jointly Optimized Spatial Histogram UNET Architecture (JOSHUA) for Adipose Tissue Segmentation. Undergraduate BME student Nisha Kotta (BS, May 2022) contributed to the successful completion of this work as well!
5/2022: Marisa Pacheco was selected to participate in the SEC Emerging Scholars Program for the 2022-2023 academic year! This program will help her explore and prepare for her future career in academia, engineering education, and research! Mari is one of 5 students selected to participate from the University of Florida! Congratulations, Mari!
05/2022: Nickolas Davies was awarded a Summer Research grant stipend from the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA), which is a short-Term Institutional Research Training Grant (T35) to support his Medical Student Research Program (MSRP) project for Summer 2022! Nick also received financial support for his professional development and conference attendance over the next year! Congratulations, Nick!
5/2022: Marisa Pacheco was selected to be a UF Chemical Engineering PhD Peer Mentor Leader for the 2022-2023 academic year! This award comes with extra support for Mari to travel to conferences!

4/2022: Julie Jameson is hooded and her PhD is conferred as the first PhD student in the Stoppel Lab! Julie's next step in her career is a joint postdoc with UES, Inc. and the Wright-Patterson Airforce Base in Dayton, OH! Julie successfully defended her PhD on March 14, 2022. Congratulations, Julie!!
4/4/2022: Marisa Pacheco and Elizabeth Aikman are both awarded 3-year National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships through the NSF GRFP! These awards recognize their dedication and commitment not just to science and research, but to the broader impact this work has on our community. We are so incredibly proud. Together, Mari and Elizabeth make up 12% of the current UF students awarded this fellowship (2/17 current UF student awardees). They are also the only current UF Chemical Engineering PhD Awardees for the 2022 cycle.

7/1/2021: Prof. Whitney Stoppel was awarded the William P and Tracy Cirioli Term Professorship in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Florida! Dr. Stoppel is incredibly grateful for the generous contributions to this foundation and the financial support this Professorship will provide to support professional development, undergraduate student research awards, and graduate student research activities in the Stoppel Lab.
07/2021: Julie Jameson's (PhD, 2022) 1st first author manuscript and the first manuscript authored by a Stoppel Lab PhD student was accepted for publication, entitled Estimating kinetic rate parameters for enzymatic degradation of lyophilized silk fibroin sponges! Congratulations to the team!

Considered the greatest distinction of any student award given by the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, these awards are given to students that exemplify what it truly means to be a Gator Engineer.
